History:
Maxi was born in the city of Shuri in the Ryūkyū Kingdom in 1563, the son of a confident merchant. His mother died when he was very young, so he was raised by his father aboard his ship. Maxi's father was contracted to Ryūkyū Kingdom and was not allowed to trade or travel to foreign countries. When his father died, Maxi inherited his ship, broke ties with Ryūkyū and became a freelance pirate to see the world his father never could.
One day, docked at a port in India, a traveling warrior named Kilik approached the ship and asked for passage while Maxi was out. Kilik was on a quest to destroy the demonic sword Soul Edge, the dark energy of which had possessed him, as well as caused a multitude of calamities all over the world. Maxi's first mate and adoptive brother Kyam sympathized with Kilik and agreed to ask Maxi to allow him aboard. But before the captain returned, the ship and crew were attacked by an army of otherworldly creatures in pursuit of Kilik, led by the golem Astaroth.
Maxi returned in time to save Kilik's life, but Kyam and all the rest of Maxi's crew were murdered in the battle. With his dying words, Kyam told Maxi about Kilik's quest and asked him to help. Swearing a vow of vengeance on Astaroth, Maxi teamed up with Kilik to hunt down Soul Edge. They later joined up with Xianghua of the Ming Imperial guard, and the three became close friends (OT3, tbh)
At Ostrheinsburg, the resting place of Soul Edge, the trio was confronted by Astaroth once more. Maxi stayed behind to fight him, allowing Xianghua and Kilik to go ahead, and he managed to destroy the golem. However, he was badly wounded in the fight. Xianghua successfully destroyed Soul Edge, but she and Kilik believed Maxi to be dead.

Maxi awoke in a strange village far downriver, where an old man nursed him back to health. However, he was crippled in the battle and his traveling days were over. He settled into a peaceful life in the village, though far away from the waters he called home, he was restless.
Four years later, rumors came of a dark creature resembling Astaroth terrorizing the countryside. Maxi wanted to hunt him down again, but his body was too weak to travel. The village medicine man performed a ritual on him that embedded a shard of Soul Edge inside his body, repairing his injuries and granting him an enhanced healing ability- however, it came at the cost of all his memories of Kilik and Xianghua.
Back to his former strength, Maxi set out in search of the reborn Soul Edge, this time to possess it himself, believing it will give him the power to kill Astaroth once and for all. Through the events of SC2 and 3 he regained his memories, but his diehard pursuit of Soul Edge put him at odds with Kilik and Xianghua, who are trying to destroy the evil sword again. He refused to listen to their pleas for him to stop, and separated from his friends once again to travel alone.
The shard of Soul Edge within him provides him with increased strength and an enhanced ability to heal injuries, in minutes instead of days. Of course, it also has its drawbacks. He is vulnerable to possession/corruption by its dark influence, and its energy causes his body pain when he is exposed to holy artifacts and powers.
